È documentata già dal \u003Cstrong>1481\u003C\u002Fstrong> al di fuori della partecipazione a pubblici eventi, e figura tra le prime a comparire sul Campo nelle pubbliche feste: il \u003Cstrong>1° marzo 1494\u003C\u002Fstrong>, insieme a \u003Cstrong>Giraffa\u003C\u002Fstrong>, \u003Cstrong>Chiocciola\u003C\u002Fstrong> e \u003Cstrong>Onda\u003C\u002Fstrong>, partecipò a una \u003Cstrong>"Pugna"\u003C\u002Fstrong> organizzata in onore del \u003Cstrong>Cardinale di St. Malò\u003C\u002Fstrong>.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>Le origini della sua identità sono legate alle antiche \u003Cstrong>cacce ai tori\u003C\u002Fstrong>, alle quali gli appartenenti alla Contrada presero parte con una \u003Cstrong>macchina a foggia di Drago\u003C\u002Fstrong>, guadagnandosi il nome di \u003Cstrong>"gli uomini del Drago"\u003C\u002Fstrong>.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>Per quanto riguarda la vita interna, fino alla metà del \u003Cstrong>XVII secolo\u003C\u002Fstrong> i Dragaioli tennero le proprie adunanze in \u003Cstrong>abitazioni private o botteghe del rione\u003C\u002Fstrong>. A partire dal \u003Cstrong>settembre 1650\u003C\u002Fstrong> fu loro concesso di riunirsi presso la \u003Cstrong>cappella della Compagnia Laicale di San Domenico in Camporegio\u003C\u002Fstrong>.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>La svolta definitiva per la sede della Contrada arrivò nel \u003Cstrong>1787\u003C\u002Fstrong>, quando il \u003Cstrong>Granduca di Toscana Pietro Leopoldo\u003C\u002Fstrong> donò ai Dragaioli la \u003Cstrong>chiesa di Santa Caterina\u003C\u002Fstrong> e parte del \u003Cstrong>Convento delle Monache del Paradiso\u003C\u002Fstrong>. Nel tempo lo stemma subì diversi cambiamenti. Per circa un secolo, dal 1622 al 1718, la contrada non prese parte ai giochi pubblici, scomparendo di fatto dalla scena venendo\u003Cstrong> assorbita dalle contrade vicine\u003C\u002Fstrong>. Fu grazie al cavaliere \u003Cstrong>Giovanni Antonio Pecci\u003C\u002Fstrong> che nel 1718 tornò in vita, dopo aver chiesto al tribunale di Biccherna di poter partecipare nuovamente al Palio.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>Tra il Settecento e i giorni nostri si sono poi formate e sciolte diverse alleanze. Only later did it absorb the people of the district of \u003Cstrong>San Cristoforo\u003C\u002Fstrong>, which in the 16th century had presented itself under the banner of a \u003Cstrong>bear\u003C\u002Fstrong> in some bull hunts.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>The first victory in a \u003Cstrong>real Palio\u003C\u002Fstrong> dates back to \u003Cstrong>July 2, 1664\u003C\u002Fstrong>, a date that marks the official entry of the Civetta into the history of the Palio. In 1699, the Contrada was hosted by the parish priest \u003Cstrong>Antonio Perpignani\u003C\u002Fstrong> in the church of \u003Cstrong>San Pietro in Banchi\u003C\u002Fstrong>, a building that arose on the foundations of a temple dedicated to Jupiter and known as \u003Cstrong>"San Pietro Buio"\u003C\u002Fstrong> due to the poor lighting of the interior. That same year, the Civetta won the Palio on July 2, and the banner was donated to the church; the Perpignani family had an altar built specifically assigned to the Contrada.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>In \u003Cstrong>1761\u003C\u002Fstrong>, the Civetta was the \u003Cstrong>first contrada to achieve a "capotto"\u003C\u002Fstrong>, meaning victory in both July and August in the same year.
