When Siena Becomes a Nativity Scene
From the end of November to the beginning of January, Siena transforms. The lights illuminate the medieval alleys, the scents of panforte and spices waft from the shops, and the historic center becomes a stage of lights and traditions that blends the sacred and the everyday, the ancient and the contemporary.
One strolls through the streets illuminated by light installations, visits museums and exhibitions, participates in concerts and shows, discovers the trees of each district, often decorated by the "cittini", the children of the neighborhood, and on December 1st, the feast of Saint Ansano, patron saint of Siena, is celebrated, marking the official start of the senese contrada year.
Events Not to Be Missed
Market in the Campo
For a few days, Piazza del Campo returns to its medieval origins. The wooden huts of the Market in the Campo fill with food and wine products and handicrafts: panforte, ricciarelli, cavallucci, artisan cured meats, pecorino cheeses, honey, and wines from the area. And then hand-decorated ceramics, fabrics, and unique objects that carry the warmth of the senese shops.
Walking among the stalls is a complete sensory experience: vibrant colors, intoxicating scents, intertwining voices, natural materials in hand. Those who visit the Market in the Campo take home something more than a souvenir: they take the feeling of having experienced something authentic.
Santa Lucia Fair
On December 13th, in the area of Pian dei Mantellini, the Santa Lucia Fair comes to life: stalls spread along the road and nearby streets, animated by local crafts, Christmas decorations, and traditional sweets. The symbol of the fair is the district bells: small terracotta bells decorated with the colors of the seventeen districts, perfect souvenirs that are deeply senese.
Among the flavors to seek: ricciarelli, cavallucci, panforte, brigidini — the thin crunchy wafers flavored with anise — castagnaccio, nougat, and croccante. A delicious journey into Tuscan confectionery tradition.
New Year's Eve in Piazza del Campo
On December 31st, the heart of Siena beats strong. Piazza del Campo becomes the stage for New Year's Eve: live music concerts, DJ sets, and an electric atmosphere that warms even the coldest nights. Restaurants and taverns offer festive dinners and special menus for those who want to celebrate with the best of senese cuisine.
The Befana of the Firefighters
On January 6th, in Piazza del Campo, one of the most beloved shows for children takes place: the Befana of the Firefighters. The Firefighters of Siena lower the Befana directly from the Palazzo Pubblico, using the equipment used in rescue operations. Once she descends into the square, the old lady distributes sweets to the children amidst screams of joy and wide-open eyes. A moment of pure magic, free and for everyone.
Come Experience Christmas in Siena
Christmas in Siena is something special: a city that still knows how to celebrate the festive season, with warmth, tradition, and that medieval beauty that at night, illuminated, becomes almost fairy-tale-like.
