Per capire perché è lì bisogna conoscere un uomo, e per conoscere quell'uomo bisogna immaginare una piazza , \u003Cstrong>Piazza del Campo\u003C\u002Fstrong>, riempita di migliaia di persone che ascoltano in silenzio una voce sola.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Bernardino da Siena\u003C\u002Fstrong> nacque a \u003Cstrong>Massa Marittima\u003C\u002Fstrong>, ma fu Siena a formarlo, a perderlo e a ritrovarlo. Rimasto orfano presto, crebbe in città. Quando la \u003Cstrong>peste del 1400\u003C\u002Fstrong> devastò Siena, lui rimase: assistette i malati, si ammalò a sua volta, sopravvisse. E da quella sopravvivenza nacque una vocazione che avrebbe cambiato l'Italia intera. Nel \u003Cstrong>1402\u003C\u002Fstrong> entrò nell'\u003Cstrong>Ordine dei Frati Minori\u003C\u002Fstrong>, diventando francescano. Poi cominciò a predicare.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Ch2>Il predicatore delle piazze\u003C\u002Fh2>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>Le chiese non bastavano. Non erano abbastanza grandi per contenere tutto ciò che Bernardino aveva da dire, né per contenere le folle che venivano ad ascoltarlo. Così scelse le \u003Cstrong>piazze\u003C\u002Fstrong>: spazi aperti, democratici, accessibili a tutti. Parlava in \u003Cstrong>volgare\u003C\u002Fstrong>, usava un linguaggio semplice, esempi concreti, immagini che anche il popolano più umile poteva capire e sentire proprie.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>Affrontava i problemi del suo tempo con una franchezza che stupiva: le \u003Cstrong>lotte tra famiglie\u003C\u002Fstrong>, la \u003Cstrong>corruzione\u003C\u002Fstrong>, l'\u003Cstrong>usura\u003C\u002Fstrong>, la \u003Cstrong>violenza pubblica\u003C\u002Fstrong>. Non era un predicatore di consolazione: era un predicatore di \u003Cstrong>verità\u003C\u002Fstrong>, e la gente lo seguiva perché sentiva che quella verità la riguardava davvero.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Ch2>I 45 giorni che Siena non dimenticò\u003C\u002Fh2>\r\n\r\n\u003Ch3>La lastra commemorativa\u003C\u002Fh3>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>Sul lato di \u003Cstrong>Piazza del Campo\u003C\u002Fstrong> che si affaccia sul Palazzo Pubblico, una \u003Cstrong>lastra commemorativa\u003C\u002Fstrong> ricorda uno degli eventi più straordinari della storia senese: a partire dal \u003Cstrong>15 agosto 1427\u003C\u002Fstrong>, su richiesta dei \u003Cstrong>Signori del Comune\u003C\u002Fstrong>, San Bernardino predicò ai senesi per \u003Cstrong>45 giorni consecutivi\u003C\u002Fstrong>. Per l'occasione furono costruiti un \u003Cstrong>altare\u003C\u002Fstrong> e un \u003Cstrong>pulpito\u003C\u002Fstrong> tra le finestre del Palazzo Comunale: la politica che si faceva da parte per lasciare spazio alla parola.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>Quella lastra non è solo un ricordo. È una \u003Cstrong>testimonianza di quanto quelle prediche abbiano cambiato la città\u003C\u002Fstrong>.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Ch3>Il trigramma, un sole di significati\u003C\u002Fh3>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>Al termine di ogni predica, i fedeli si avvicinavano a baciare \u003Cstrong>tavolette dipinte con il trigramma\u003C\u002Fstrong>: il \u003Cstrong>monogramma IHS\u003C\u002Fstrong>, acronimo dal greco di "Gesù Salvatore degli Uomini". San Bernardino aveva preso quel simbolo antico e lo aveva trasformato in qualcosa di nuovo: lo racchiuse in un \u003Cstrong>sole dorato\u003C\u002Fstrong>, creando un'icona di devozione al nome di Gesù che si diffuse in tutta Italia.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>Il sole rappresenta \u003Cstrong>Cristo\u003C\u002Fstrong>, i \u003Cstrong>12 raggi\u003C\u002Fstrong> sono i \u003Cstrong>12 apostoli\u003C\u002Fstrong>, l'\u003Cstrong>oro\u003C\u002Fstrong> è la divinità, l'\u003Cstrong>azzurro\u003C\u002Fstrong> è l'umanità. Un cosmo di significati in un cerchio di luce.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Ch2>Il trigramma sul Palazzo Pubblico\u003C\u002Fh2>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>Pochi anni dopo quelle prediche, l'orafo senese \u003Cstrong>Tuccio di Sano\u003C\u002Fstrong> e suo figlio realizzarono il \u003Cstrong>trigramma\u003C\u002Fstrong> che ancora oggi campeggia sulla facciata del \u003Cstrong>Palazzo Pubblico\u003C\u002Fstrong>: un atto ufficiale, un \u003Cstrong>simbolo di adesione\u003C\u002Fstrong> da parte della Repubblica ai valori della \u003Cstrong>pace\u003C\u002Fstrong>, della \u003Cstrong>concordia\u003C\u002Fstrong> e del \u003Cstrong>buon governo\u003C\u002Fstrong> che Bernardino aveva predicato.
