Basilica of the Observance: art, history, and spirituality in Siena

Discover the Basilica dell'Osservanza in Siena, a place of art, history, and spirituality linked to San Bernardino. Admire precious artworks, breathtaking views, and the tranquility of Capriola Hill.

Set in the greenery of the Capriola hill, the Basilica of the Observance offers an oasis of silence and contemplation just outside the walls of Siena, a place where art, history, and spirituality intertwine away from the more crowded paths.

The origins of the basilica date back to the mid-15th century, when Saint Bernardino of Siena, a beloved figure in the city, began preaching on the hill, inspiring the construction of a Franciscan convent dedicated to the “Observance,” meaning the strict adherence to the Franciscan rule. After his death in 1444 in L’Aquila, his followers wanted to honor his memory by building a church that would preserve his spirit. Construction began in 1476 and continued for several decades, resulting in a harmonious and sober complex, typical of Franciscan architecture.

Over the centuries, the convent and the basilica have accompanied the religious and civil life of the city: the hill also served as a strategic observation point during the wars between Siena and Florence, and the main bell warned the population in case of danger.

The basilica suffered severe damage during World War II: the bombings of 1944 almost completely hit the building. The faithful reconstruction, completed in the 1950s, returned to the city one of its dearest places.

Architecture and artworks

The simple and bright interior houses works of great value, including paintings attributed to Sano di Pietro, and glazed terracotta works featuring Saint Louis of Toulouse and Saint Bonaventure by Andrea della Robbia. Particularly striking is the chapel dedicated to Saint Bernardino, which preserves relics and testimonies of his preaching.

The facade, sober and immersed in greenery, reflects the harmony of Franciscan architecture. Inside, the complex unfolds in spaces that tell centuries of history, from the original decorations of the 15th century to the reconstruction interventions of the 20th century.

Convent and views

The attached convent houses a valuable historical library, rich in manuscripts and ancient volumes related to Franciscan preaching and Siena's history. The square in front offers a panoramic view of the Tuscan countryside and the city, making it ideal for a contemplative break or for taking suggestive photographs.

The Basilica of the Observance today is a place of peace and reflection, perfect for those who love art, history, and spirituality. The intimate atmosphere and the strong connection with Saint Bernardino make it an essential stop to discover the most authentic soul of Siena.
