A history written in stone

There are places that still carry the weight of history in their walls. The Medicean Fortress of Siena, also known as Fort of Santa Barbara, is one of them. Built between 1561 and 1563 by order of Cosimo I de' Medici, it stands on the hill of Lizza in a panoramic position, just a short walk from the historic center, as a silent reminder of a past filled with conquests, rebellions, and power.

Its history begins with a defeat: the final one of the Republic of Siena in 1555. The fortress was born with a precise task: to control the city and prevent new uprisings against Florentine rule. But history, even before that, had already left its mark: on its very site stood a Spanish citadel commissioned by Charles V in 1548, deeply hated by the Sienese and destroyed during the uprising of 1552. What the Sienese had demolished, the Medici wanted to rebuild, larger, stronger, more enduring.

The architecture

Designed by architect Baldassarre Lanci, the fortress features a quadrangular plan with four corner bastions: San Francesco, San Filippo, La Madonna, and San Domenico. The bastions still display the Medici coats of arms in travertine, a mute symbol of Florentine power over the conquered city. The walls, built of bricks and stone, form a perimeter of about 1,500 meters, traversable through panoramic walkways that offer spectacular views of Siena and the Tuscan countryside. The bastion of San Domenico is considered one of the most romantic spots in the city: the ideal place to admire the sunset over the medieval rooftops, when the orange light transforms everything into a painting.

From fortress to green heart of the city

A park for everyone

Demilitarized at the end of the 18th century, the fortress was transformed into a public garden in 1937 and today is one of the most beloved places by Sienese and tourists. Wide green spaces, tree-lined avenues, benches, and shaded areas make it perfect for a refreshing break during a visit to the city, away from traffic, open, and pleasantly quiet.

Culture, music, and wine

The fortress is also a vibrant cultural hub: it hosts events, concerts, exhibitions, and manifestations of all kinds. Here is the operational headquarters of Siena Jazz, one of the most important musical realities in the Italian scene. In the cellars, there is a historic institution: the Italian Wine Cellar, dedicated to enhancing Italian wines, with a selection of over 1,500 labels from more than 600 companies. A journey into the best of national wine production, preserved right under the ancient Medicean walls.

A view not to be missed

The elevated position of the fortress offers one of the most beautiful views of Siena: the Torre del Mangia, the Cathedral, the Tuscan hills stretching to the horizon. A privileged observation point, perfect for striking photographs at any hour of the day. The main entrance is located on the northeast side, near the Gardens of Lizza, easily reachable on foot from the historic center. A place where history, nature, and beauty meet, and where Siena can be admired from above, as it deserves.
