The Historical Archive
The Archive houses parchments, registers, matriculations, official acts, and correspondence that give voice to the Sienese Study from 1240 to today. The medieval parchments, with seals and meticulous writings, document privileges and statutes fundamental to the identity of the University, while more recent materials recount reforms, transformations, and key moments in the cultural life of the city.
The Archive is also accessible to scholars and researchers, who find unique materials here to study the history of higher education in Tuscany.
The Historical Path
The path guides visitors through ancient books, scientific instruments, period photographs, and symbolic objects that illustrate university life between the Middle Ages and contemporary times. The Academic Senate Hall, with historic furnishings and coats of arms, conveys the solemnity of the decisions that have guided the Study for centuries. The halls in the ancient tower houses preserve thick walls and original openings, evoking 13th-century Siena.
Every object and document is a fragment of memory of the life of students, the lessons of teachers, the grand-ducal reforms, and the challenges of the 20th century.
Visiting Experience
The atmosphere is intimate and enveloping: the light filtering through the ancient windows, the silence of the halls, and the scent of historical books create an immersive experience that invites one to stop, observe, and listen to history.
The path is visitable by appointment or on dedicated days, often accompanied by guides who enrich the visit with anecdotes and curiosities about academic life.
