Collection of the Conservatori Riuniti Foundation: A Journey Through the History and Art of Siena

From Origins to Today's Heritage

Founded in 1580 by Domenico Billò, the Congregation of the Poor Abandoned had a clear goal: to welcome and educate young girls from poor families. Over time, with the support of the Chigi family, the institution expanded and transformed into the Conservatory of San Raimondo al Refugio. Walking through the halls of the foundation, one can still sense the care and attention towards those who lived here, amidst devotion, study, and social commitment.

An Artistic Heritage from the 15th to the 19th Century

The collections hold an important historical and artistic heritage, ranging from the 15th to the 19th century. It is not just about sacred art: paintings, sculptures, ceramics, liturgical furnishings, and sacred vestments tell the story of the charitable institutions of Siena and the daily lives of those who frequented them. Each room is a small journey through time, filled with colors, materials, and gestures that speak of a city that has managed to reconcile faith, culture, and social responsibility.

Library and Educational Pathways

The foundation also houses a very rich historical library, created mainly to support educational activities in the boarding school. Browsing through the volumes or observing the displayed documents means coming into contact with the minds and educational practices of the past, perceiving the commitment to transmit knowledge and values to future generations.

Temporary Exhibitions and Museum Network

In addition to the permanent collections, the foundation hosts temporary exhibitions that allow visitors to discover new aspects of Siena's history and art. Part of the network of Sienese Museums, the Collection of the Conservatori Riuniti Foundation offers visitors a complete cultural experience, capable of uniting art, history, and social memory in an accessible and fascinating journey.
