HISTORY OF THE DISTRICT OF THE PORCUPINE
The District of the Porcupine has its roots in the territory of the northernmost portion of the city, inhabited by people divided into the Companies of La Magione and San Bartolomeo, of San Vincenzo and Santo Stefano.
The first visual testimony of the District's identity dates back to the bull hunt that took place in Piazza del Campo in 1516: the Companies of La Magione and San Bartolomeo appeared with a large machine representing a porcupine, while the Companies of San Vincenzo and Santo Stefano led one in the shape of a golden rampant lion. It was only in 1546 that all the inhabitants of Camollia presented themselves to the hunt under a single banner, thus marking the definitive unification of the companies into a single district.
