A balcony over time
Imagine being the rulers of one of the most powerful cities of the Middle Ages. The meetings are over, decisions made, the weight of command lightens for a moment. You rise, walk down a corridor, and look out over one of the most beautiful views the human eye can see. Below you, Piazza del Mercato. On the horizon, the Crete Senesi hills. Next to you, the Torre del Mangia rising towards the sky.
This was the privilege of the Nine, the magistracy that led Siena during its brightest period. And the Loggia dei Nove, built between the late 13th and early 14th century, was their private space: a place of calm, reflection, and silent contemplation of the city they governed.
A place of power and devotion
The loggia also goes by another name: Loggia della Vergine. Because the Nine would go there to entrust Siena to the protection of the Madonna, a central figure in the city's spirituality, an invisible yet constant presence in the political choices of the Republic.
It was also a strategic point: from those arches, the rulers could observe city life without being seen, follow what was happening in the square and the streets, read the pulse of the city in real time. A gaze on the world that was both political, spiritual, and human.
The architecture, the light, the panorama
Gothic arches suspended in the sky
The gothic arches of the loggia are a refined example of medieval civil architecture: sober yet elegant, light yet solid, perfectly integrated with the rest of the Palazzo Pubblico. A structure that does not seek to amaze with excesses, but knows exactly what to do: frame beauty.
The most thrilling view of Siena
Looking out from the Loggia dei Nove means embracing with a single glance the medieval rooftops of the historic center, the Torre del Mangia towering beside you and the gentle hills of the Val d'Arbia on the horizon. In the morning, the loggia is bright and airy, at sunset it becomes a suspended and almost mystical place, perfect for photographs that no filter could enhance.
Come to contemplate it
Over the centuries, the Loggia dei Nove has welcomed ambassadors, illustrious guests, and travelers who have celebrated its beauty. Today it is your turn.
Climb to the Palazzo Pubblico, walk through the halls, look out. Certain views cannot be described: they must be breathed in.
