HISTORY OF CONTRADA DELLA LUPA
The emblem of the Lupa is derived from an act of fidelity of the inhabitants to Rome, the legendary mother of Siena. It should be noted, however, that the Roman she-wolf, adopted as a symbol since the republican times of Mario, is actually an Etruscan symbol, brought to Rome from Veio after the destruction of that city. The so-called "twins" are instead the result of a Renaissance addition.
The territory of the Contrada was inhabited by personalities of great cultural significance: among them the famous painter Antonio Bazzi, known as "Sodoma", and Sapia Saracini, still remembered today at the entrance of Vallerozzi by a plaque bearing Dante's verses (Purgatorio, Canto XIII).
