HISTORY OF THE DISTRICT OF THE PANTHER
The roots of the District date back to the first half of the 16th century, in the neighborhood of Laterino, west area of Siena, linked to the Military Companies of Stalloreggi. The Panther officially emerged around 1541, on the occasion of the marriage between Lorenzo Mariscotti and Cassandra Petrucci, a union that sealed the peace between the two families. The Mariscotti granted the leopard, present in their coat of arms, as a symbol to the new District. The first written testimony dates back to 1546, during a bull hunt in Piazza del Campo.
In the 17th century, the Panther triumphed in the "games of fighting", a form of collective and very violent boxing, and in the races with buffaloes. A memorable episode dates back to 1696, when it won a Palio in front of Grand Duke Cosimo III, receiving as a prize a precious silver glove box. Between the 18th and 19th centuries, the District distinguished itself for the spectacular "appearances": triumphant allegorical floats with temples of peace or mythological deities like Bacchus, pulled by real mechanical panthers.
The 20th century is marked by an unforgettable figure: the famous baritone Ettore Bastianini, a panterino by birth, who became Captain in 1959 and led the District to victory in 1963. His premature death left a deep void, filled by the affection of the district members, who dedicated a street to him and founded the Society of the Two Doors, still today the social heart of the neighborhood.
