Gateway to Heaven: the panoramic path above the Siena Cathedral

Admiring Siena from the sky is not a dream: with the Gateway to Heaven you can climb above the vaults of the Cathedral and view the city from a perspective that has remained hidden for hundreds of years. It is an exclusive path that allows access to the heights of the Siena Cathedral, among attics, walkways, and panoramic views that have been closed to the public for centuries.

These spaces were used only by the craftsmen and architects who built and maintained the Siena Cathedral over time, and they were never intended to be accessible to everyone.

An ascent to the hidden part of the Cathedral

The name Gateway to Heaven evokes Jacob's dream ladder, described in the Genesis, a symbol of an ascent to the divine. An image that perfectly accompanies a path capable of taking the visitor beyond the visible church, into its most hidden structure.

The opening to the public is recent and has been made possible thanks to an important restoration and safety project, which has enhanced these spaces without altering their historical structure.

The Cathedral seen from above

The path allows you to walk above the starry vaults of the nave and closely observe the complex Gothic architecture that supports the Cathedral.

The internal views allow you to admire from above the marble floor, the Piccolomini Library, the dome, and the naves, offering a unique perspective on the entire building. During the period when the Cathedral's floor is uncovered, the view becomes even more evocative and allows you to see the entire marble cycle in one glance.

Walkways, details, and views of Siena

From the external walkways, spectacular views open up on Siena, the bell tower, the Facciatone, and the surrounding hills, transforming the visit into an unforgettable panoramic experience.

The original medieval structures, among beams, stairs, corridors, and passages, closely show the engineering and construction techniques that made the realization of the Cathedral possible. Even details normally invisible from below, such as capitals, sculpted decorations, and Gothic motifs, become observable from just a few centimeters away.

A rare and precious visit

For centuries this place remained unknown: only those in the know could access it. Today, the Gateway to Heaven represents a magical experience, thanks to the combination of history, architecture, views, and unique atmospheres.

The visit is regulated by limited entries and is accompanied by specialized personnel, to ensure safety and protection of the environments. The path is open only during certain periods of the year, with specific seasonal hours.

Discover the Gateway to Heaven and experience the Siena Cathedral from a unique perspective, among hidden walkways, panoramic views, and architectural details that have remained invisible for centuries.
