HISTORY OF THE DISTRICT OF THE TOWER

The District of the Tower originates from the union of the ancient military companies of Salicotto di Sopra and Salicotto di Sotto. Its first documented participation in a public festival dates back to 1499, when it was still known by the name of Lionfante, or Liofante, and had as its emblem an elephant.

The current symbol, an elephant topped by a tower, is a tribute to the monumental Torre del Mangia that dominates the territory of the district.

PALIOS AND RESULTS

WON PALII: for the Contrada and recognized 45

PARTICULARITIES

TITLE: holds the title of "Priora" for having hosted the first meeting of the Magistrate of the Districts, a recognition that underscores its historical and institutional role within the Sienese district community.

CURIOSITIES
In 1961, to celebrate a victory at the Palio, the members of the Tower district plucked 43 geese, as many as the victories accumulated up to that moment. The parish priest of the Goose responded with a solemn "curse", condemning the Tower to not win for as many years. Interestingly, the district returned to win exactly 44 years later.

The "stolen" Banner (1856): a historical anecdote recounts that in 1856 the banner won in 1816 was stolen from the district church; investigations at the time led to the belief that it was burned by rivals in Fontebranda.
