Via Fonte Nuova. The Siena of Everyday Life

A street that tells the city from below

There are streets that make history, and streets that live it. Via Fonte Nuova belongs to the second category: a quiet, residential street in the Terzo di Camollia, not a noble street, not a monumental street. A real street, once lived in by artisans, laundresses, farmers, and working-class families who built their everyday lives here. A street that has always been linked to the Contrada della Lupa.

The name has remained unchanged over time, while many other Sienese streets have changed their names: a sign of a strong identity, tied to something concrete and necessary. That fountain that gives the street its name was not an ornament: it was life.

The water, the channels, the fountain

In Siena, water did not arrive by chance. It came through the channels: the famous underground tunnels that for centuries brought water into the city, one of the most sophisticated medieval water systems in Italy. The Fonte Nuova was part of this system: built to ensure water for the neighborhoods in the area, the term "new" distinguished it from the older fountains already present in the territory.

Like all the great Sienese fountains, it followed a precise scheme: basins for drinking water, basins for washing clothes, basins for watering animals. Not just a water supply point, but a meeting place, a place of work, of social life. The invisible center of a neighborhood.

A medieval street still alive

Everyday architecture

Along Via Fonte Nuova, many houses still preserve medieval and Renaissance elements: brick arches, stone portals, double and triple windows that tell centuries of history without the need for explanatory signs. Not noble palaces, but homes of those who worked with their hands and inhabited the city from below.

The paths, the gardens, the walls

The street was a secondary but fundamental route: it connected the houses of the neighborhood with the fountain, allowing quick access to Via Camollia and to the farmlands and gardens that once surrounded the city. Even today, the area preserves the medieval walls and glimpses that lead to a lesser-known Siena, made of slow paths and unexpected landscapes.

Come and discover it

Via Fonte Nuova is a small window onto the authentic Siena: far from tourist flows, rich in everyday history, immersed in a lively and traditional neighborhood.

Walk without haste, look at the details, seek the signs of the past in the stones. Certain streets are not visited: they are discovered, one step at a time.
