Via Santa Caterina. The Road of the Saint and the Neighborhood

Via Santa Caterina is one of the most intense and evocative streets in Siena: here Santa Caterina da Siena was born in 1347, here stands the Cateriniano Sanctuary, and here one can still breathe the medieval soul of the Fontebranda district. An urban pilgrimage to experience at least once.

A descent into the medieval heart

There is something special about walking down Via Santa Caterina: a feeling of descending not only physically but into the oldest and most authentic Siena. The street descends into the Fontebranda district, one of the most popular and ancient in the city, connecting the Costa di Sant'Antonio with the famous medieval fountain, passing by brick houses from the 14th and 15th centuries, Gothic arches, and panoramic views that suddenly open up towards San Domenico and the valley below.

But what makes this street unique is not just the architecture. It is the presence, still alive after seven centuries, of a woman born here in 1347: Santa Caterina da Siena.

The Cateriniano Sanctuary

The Birthplace of Santa Caterina, now the Cateriniano Sanctuary, is the spiritual heart of the street and one of the most visited sites in the city. An intricate complex that includes the Birthplace of the saint, the Oratory of the Kitchen where Caterina prayed, the Oratory of the Chamber with relics and frescoes, and the Portico of the Communities with the coats of arms of the cities that venerate her around the world.

Next to the sanctuary is the church that houses the miraculous Crucifix from which, according to tradition, Caterina received the invisible stigmata: a place of great spiritual intensity, where silence has a different weight.

The neighborhood, the dyers, popular life

A district of workers

Caterina was not born in a palace, nor did she grow up in a privileged environment. She was born in a lively, noisy, and populated neighborhood: that of the dyers, the tanners, the artisans who worked thanks to the abundant water of Fontebranda. A world of daily toil and a close-knit community, where holiness did not come despite humble origins, but somehow through them.

The ascent of pilgrims

For centuries, pilgrims from all over the world have walked down Via Santa Caterina to reach the saint's house. It is considered a kind of small urban pilgrimage: a street that is walked with a different pace, slower, more attentive, as if the stones themselves demanded respect.

Two souls in one street

Via Santa Caterina tells of two Sienas in one: the deep spirituality of a woman who changed the history of the Church, and the popular life of a district that has always known how to be itself. A contrast that does not divide, but enriches.

Come walk it

Walk down Via Santa Caterina, enter the Sanctuary, stop in silence. Certain streets are not walked: they are lived.
