The monuments and sacred places of Siena
A guide to the historical wonders and sacred masterpieces of the city of the Palio

Santuario Casa di Santa Caterina
Have you ever imagined crossing the threshold of a saint's house?
In Siena, you can truly do it, and not in just any place, but in the house where Saint Catherine was born and lived. The Sanctuary House of Saint Catherine, in the Fontebranda area, is one of those places that reveal themselves step by step, bringing forth a living memory, made of spaces, silences, and testimonies.
As soon as you pass through the entrance, the courtyard opens up with the Portico of the Municipalities of Italy, built following the proclamation of Catherine as Patroness of Italy, which took place on June 19, 1939, by Pius XII. Its name comes from a symbolic gesture: many municipalities in the area donated to the city of Siena the amount corresponding to the cost of a brick to contribute to the construction of the portico. Today, this place welcomes many pilgrims and tourists from all over the world.

Battistero di San Giovanni
An untouched space, steeped in history and spirituality, where art and religion intertwine in a timeless cultural journey. The Baptistery of San Giovanni is one of the most fascinating examples of Renaissance and Gothic architecture: built between the second and third decades of the 14th century, perhaps under the direction of the master builder Camaino di Crescentino, it stands on pre-existing structures, probably already dedicated to baptismal rites in the early medieval period.

Duomo di Siena
Cripta
There are discoveries that rewrite history. That of the Crypt of the Siena Cathedral is one of them. During some renovation work beneath the Cathedral, workers noticed that behind a wall there was an empty space. When they opened it, they found themselves facing something incredible: perfectly preserved medieval frescoes, never exposed to light, sealed for over seven hundred years. A suspended time. An untouched world. What had been walled up to expand the Cathedral and make its base more solid was originally the Oratory of SS. Giovannino and Gennaro, a space reserved for the clergy and preparatory functions, then forgotten. And it is precisely this involuntary oblivion that saved it.

Colonna della Lupa Senese
There are symbols that are found everywhere and that, over time, become the very face of a city. In Siena, that symbol is the Sienese She-Wolf, a familiar presence that accompanies residents and visitors through squares, streets, and monuments.
Its image depicts a she-wolf nursing two twins and recalls the legend that tells of the city's origins.

Logge della Mercanzia
There was a time when the world passed through Siena: the Logge della Mercanzia still preserve its story today.
Behind Piazza del Campo, in the famous Crocevia del Travaglio, this space marked the meeting point of the main medieval roads, including the Via Francigena. Here passed merchants, pilgrims, and travelers from all over Europe.

Logge del Papa
The Pope's Loggias are one of Siena's Renaissance jewels: built in 1462 by order of Pope Pius II Piccolomini, in travertine marble with Corinthian arches. A gift of stone that still surprises those who encounter it today.
